New songs are expected to be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace right around the game's March release, and with only one of the new Xbox controllers, it was impossible for us to try co-op or head-to-head multiplayer. Sadly, there were two aspects of the Xbox 360 version we weren't unable to test: downloadable content, and multiplayer. We were able to start working through many of the Xbox 360 Achievements, mostly simpler tasks like a 100-note streak or a perfect 100 percent on one of the easier songs.

Perhaps more importantly, we've yet to see any slowdowns in any of the venues, which we've seen on the PS2 version on a few rare occasions. While the Guitar Hero franchise has never been one to lean heavily on graphics, the Xbox 360 version, running in hi-def, was noticeably sharper than its PS2 counterpart. Guitar Hero fans have been waiting a while for some Maiden, and the track doesn't disappoint, regardless of difficulty level: on Medium, it's just busy enough to keep you headbanging to the rhythm on Expert, the main riff and solo are hard enough that even the more accomplished players will need at least few playthroughs to get the hang of it. For this build, at least, the new songs were sprinkled throughout the different tiers, so it took us some time before we reached My Chemical Romance's "Dead!" and Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" in the upper groups. When we asked about this at CES, we were told that this set list wasn't finalized, so there's still a bit of uncertainty surrounding how the songs will ultimately be organized. It appears some of the original GH2 songs may get shifted around as well, as "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Strutter" had been moved to the opening group, with "Mother" and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" shifted to the second tier.

Each of the game's eight "tiers" will now have six songs (compared to five in the PS2 version), and two of them - The Toadies' "Possum Kingdom" and Rancid's "Salvation" - appeared in the opening bracket. Naturally, the first thing we did with the preview version was unlock all the new songs by playing through the career mode. "The Trooper" has been on a nonstop loop ever since. For Guitar Hero addicts such as ourselves, that wasn't nearly enough, so we were pretty excited when a preview version showed up at GameSpy HQ a few days ago, along with a new controller for us to test out. A few weeks back at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, we had a chance to go hands-on with the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II, including 10 additional songs and the new X-Plorer guitar controller.
